One of the last things I did today was to look through a local grocery store for some supper.
The tour bus had dropped two of us off this evening to try to find a catholic church so we could attend a vigil mass. Julia from Malaysia and I had a map and we set off on a rapid walk through a neighborhood, and past the train station as it was getting dark. When we arrived at the place where the map said the church would be, there was no church to be found. We asked a few passersby, but most had no idea what we were saying or how to help. Wandering around the neighborhood, we tried a few doors, and saw a few buildings that looked like possible churches, but no luck. By now, we were 15 minutes late for the service. We continued looking and seeking direction from the few people who walked by, but finally decided that it was not to be. Disappointing, because our busy schedule the next day prevented us from attending Sunday mass, and we were both looking forward to participating in a service in Japanese! We did manage to locate the train station again, and purchased tickets. We also succeeded in locating the correct place to stand and wait for a train which was going in the direction of our hotel. (Small successes!)
Since it was late, and we didn't want to get lost again, Julia and I decided to search out our supper at a grocery store next to the station. This was my first experience in a Japanese grocery store, so I took a few photos.
Bags 'o fish
Beautiful blue ones!
Fish with fish faces
No idea what the labels said, but I was fascinated with the fish. Beautiful colors and patterns.
Next, were some other sea creatures:
Octopi
These were huge!
Squids
Squidlets?
The presentation was lovely:
I was happy to spot these little mushrooms with long legs. We have had these in various soups along the way. Not sure what they are called, but they are yummy. They grow together in clumps.
In the next few days, I'll share more about this wonder filled Saturday in Japan.
